the company we keep
location: 634 St Clair Ave West
i’d been meaning to go to this cafe for a while. i’d pass it on the st. clair streetcar going west and tell myself to do some work from there one day, but never did.
today was that day.
friend in tow, i brought my laptop and settled into a corner table for a lunchtime work session.
what i ate:
iced matcha oat latte
breakfast sandwich (maple sausage, egg, cheddar)
chickepea smash (open-faced sandwich with mashed chickpeas, cucumber, arugula on sourdough)
sprinkle cookie
yes, i ate two sandwiches. yes, i needed it.
they have a farmhouse-chic vibe going on, which i appreciated. i love when cafes have antique/antique-looking furniture, like worn-out wooden benches and retro stereo sets. every cafe could look like this and i’d feel at home. not sure what it is about this type of furniture that makes me feel so comfortable, but i definitely tend to lean towards these types of designs versus more modern ones. i just don’t wanna feel like i’ve walked into ex-machina, ya know?
there are some good pics of the cafe in this 2021 blogTO article for your viewing pleasure. seems the place opened not too long ago and is the product of a baker and sommelier. makes sense, as their fridges are stocked with Sunday Morning Pies (a creation of the baker) and a daily 2pm to 5pm happy hour (a creation of, i’m assuming, the sommelier). there’s also an emphasis on vegan and gluten-free items, as one of the founders is gluten-intolerant. (we love an inclusive queen.)
would i come back? yeah. vibes were good, music was good (oldies), food was pretty good and made me feel healthy. there was ample seating and a bunch of other people working on laptops, so i didn’t feel like a mooch for taking up a table and the cafe wifi. there was even someone drawing/colouring in pencil crayons at the next table.
i’m happy that this cafe kicked off my writing series/blog/whatever this is. i needed something to ease myself back into writing about literally anything because the well has been d r y . but hopefully, now, not.
